INHART focuses on research covering various fields, including smart and quick detection systems for non-halal products, investigations of potential biomarker for non-halal ingredients, halal vaccine, Muslim friendly hospitality and tourism, development of halalan and toyyiban food processing technology, etc.

The development of halal-related new science and technology innovations moves along with the rapid growth of halal industry. New machines, gadgets, methods are being created which will definitely boost the halal industry.

Researcher efforts by INHART members have led to breakthrough inventions which will bring impact to halal industry. Below are some of the award winning inventions in the Malaysia High-tech Challenge organized by PlatCom, AIM, SMECorp and HTVB.

i. LAD-PEN
"LADPEN - Lard and Alcohol Detector - Portable Electronic Nose" is a pen-sized portable kit to detect alcohol and lard in products. ii. HALAL FOOD SUPPLEMENTS FROM SEAWEED
“CO2 Super Critical Fluid Extraction (SFE) for Halal Fucoxanthin Products”
This is an invention to obtain bioactive compound for Nutraceutical and Pharmaceutical Application. This project will use green process to obtain Fucoxanthin in an active state. It will equally open up the opportunity to explore the under-utilized macro-algae as raw material. Research efforts will be channeled toward process optimization, scale-up, micro- and nano-encapsulation and product applications. The research is led by Prof .Dr. Irwandi Jaswir. This product will be commercialized by Bumificient Sdn Bhd.

iii. HALAL MICROCARRIER
“Versamic-Versatile Gelatine Coated Polycaprolactone Micro-carriers for Biopharmaceutical Production and Tissue Engineering Apllication”
High density mammalian cell culture is important for the production of various biopharmaceutical products (e.g. viral vaccines, recombinant proteins, gene therapy vectors etc.). By using microcarriers, high density cell culture can be easily achieved as they provide large surface area for cell attachment and growth. Microcarriers also have great potentials in tissue engineering applications such as in skin grafting and organ regeneration. However, the current microcarriers in the market pose 2 major gaps which are the cost and shari’ah compliant aspect. The Microcarrier Research Team which comprises of members from interdisciplinary backgrounds including bioprocessing, chemistry, biomedical science, mammalian cell culture, halal industry science and polymer/material science, in collaboration with a local SME company, Silverline Sdn. Bhd. attempt to provide solutions to these two challenges via the Halal Hi-Tech Challenge 2016, with the hope that by overcoming these challenges the new halal microcarrier product termed VersaMIC, will benefit the biopharmaceutical / health / halal industries, as well as Muslim consumers. This research is led by Prof Dr. Hamzah Mohd Salleh.

iv. MUSLIM FRIENDLY HOSPITALITY RATING TOOL
The Muslim Friendly Hospitality Rating Tool is the first of its kind to rate hotels according to the needs of Muslim tourists. The total points scored by the hotel determines the rank of the hotel in terms Muslim friendliness to the customers.
This is one of the successful research product sponsored by the Ministry of Higher Education to enhance tourism. The invention was led by Dr. Khairusy Syakirin Has-yun Hashim from Kulliyyah of Architechture and Built Environment.
The product will be commercialized by Roshen Resources Sdn. Bhd.

v. HALAL CREAM CHEESE AND DRIED WHEY PROTEIN USING BROMELAIN ENZYME
“Halal Cream Cheese and Dried Whey Protein Using Bromelain Enzyme as SubtitutePre-filled Syringe (PFS) Nano-Emulsion Antibiotic for Periondititis.” Bromelain is a mixture of proteolytic enzymes derived from the stems and juice of pineapples. It has been extensively used in food industry; for meat tenderization, baking processes, and in prevention of browning of apple juice. Stem bromelain is a highly accepted phytotherapeutic agent. It has anti-tumor and antiinflammatory effects, use in wound healing, as digestive aids, etc. The use of bromelain as halal ingredients will create new alternative in food industry. This project is led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Azura Amid from Kulliyyah of Engineering
