iii. HALAL MICROCARRIER
“Versamic-Versatile Gelatine Coated Polycaprolactone Micro-carriers for Biopharmaceutical Production and Tissue Engineering Apllication”
High density mammalian cell culture is important for the production of various biopharmaceutical products (e.g. viral vaccines, recombinant proteins, gene therapy vectors etc.). By using microcarriers, high density cell culture can be easily achieved as they provide large surface area for cell attachment and growth. Microcarriers also have great potentials in tissue engineering applications such as in skin grafting and organ regeneration. However, the current microcarriers in the market pose 2 major gaps which are the cost and shari’ah compliant aspect. The Microcarrier Research Team which comprises of members from interdisciplinary backgrounds including bioprocessing, chemistry, biomedical science, mammalian cell culture, halal industry science and polymer/material science, in collaboration with a local SME company, Silverline Sdn. Bhd. attempt to provide solutions to these two challenges via the Halal Hi-Tech Challenge 2016, with the hope that by overcoming these challenges the new halal microcarrier product termed VersaMIC, will benefit the biopharmaceutical / health / halal industries, as well as Muslim consumers. This research is led by Prof Dr. Hamzah Mohd Salleh.
